CITY OF BALDWIN PARK STOP THE IMPOUNDS AND ARRESTS!
On Saturday, December 28th in the middle of the holiday season the City of Baldwin Park in L.A. County held a massive DUI checkpoint which resulted in the arrest of more than 30 undocumented immigrants.
At the checkpoint drivers were asked to present their driver's license or a valid form of identification; however, Police Chief Mike Taylor and his subordinates refused to accept consular IDs in complete contradiction to their three-year policy and practice of accepting consular IDs as valid forms of identification. Those with consular IDs were arrested, fingerprinted, held for more than 20 hours, and denied the right to call their relatives, attorneys, and consulate.
Not only that, but the police officers competed against each other to see who could arrest the most and fill up the police vans beyond capacity. It is clear that Chief Taylor and his subordinates deliberately broke state law AB 353 by arresting undocumented immigrants and impounding their vehicles.
They made thousands of dollars in the process and provided to guarantee that the arrestees' information was not shared with ICE agents. We fear that they will be targeted by ICE in the near future and be placed in deportation proceedings. We have to put an end to Baldwin Park's rogue police force, unjust checkpoint practices, and unwarranted confiscation of undocumented immigrants' private property.
The City of Baldwin Park Police department continues to impound the cars of drivers including school police. Due to these practices Baldwin Park community member Sergio Flores is in deportation proceedings for driving with out a license. The Baldwin Park continues to violate state law including the TRUST Act.
We are not their piggy bank and will not rest until they meet our demands. We urge you to stand in solidarity with the residents of Baldwin Park and demand accountability and justice from Baldwin Park city officials.
The community demands are:
1. The creation of an Ad hoc committee to investigate and oversee the resolution of these demands, including the implementation of the California Trust Act (AB4) in Baldwin Park.
2. A moratorium on checkpoints, saturation patrols, and other Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) Grant operations
3. Reimbursement of fees incurred by the arrests and impoundment of vehicles of all persons or property involved in the December 28, 2013, checkpoints, which are violative of public policy.
4. The City Council shall issue a resolution declaring that the Matricula Consular will be recognized as acceptable identification by all departments of the City of Baldwin Park, including the Police Department.
